Baker King, Kim Tak Gu Episode 23 Summary

It’s a very emotional episode and I’m afraid if they keep the mood this way for the next 2 or 3 episode, people are gonna get tired. But I like the little change happened to Tak Gu. He’s getting bolder and more mature in facing the reality. I think he started to realize that he had a right to be angry, to fight for his/people he loved’s honor and could not be always that nice, especially to all those vicious people. He had to start to show his fangs and claws.

Apparently, Tak Gu’s sense of smell and taste were back. And it was he, himself, who volunteered to make the bong bread on the court. He said he had found the correct fermentation. He said he had eaten Bong bread long ago and his memory still remembered the smell of that bread. So all he had to do was matching the smell of bong bread in his memory with the fermentation alcohol.

This is the scene where Tak Gu first ate the bong bread:

The competition started. From Tak Gu’s confidence and cheerful face, I guessed the winner had been clear. But Ma jun’s cold face also looked very confident. Their hands were busy baking bread while their minds were busy commenting about this event. For Ma jun, it’s always about “defeating that punk.” But for Tak Gu, he said it wan’t about defeating someone, it’s about fighting for his love ones’ honor.

Then we knew why Ma jun was ver confident. He asked his evil biological father to bribe some of the judges. The result was so far in line his expectation, but it changed when it came to this man:

The last judge voted for Tak Gu’s bread and it meant winning was on the Pal Bong bakery’s side. Even though Park Choon Bae’s expression told that he had known he’d lost this court since Tak Gu fermented the dough, Ma jun was so shocked. He couldn’t take it, so he confronted the judge. And i like the words the judge was saying, “As a real baker, it’s a very wrong conduct to deny that bread.”

Mr. Pal bong finally got consciousness. And when Tak Gu went out on the way to the bakery, he saw Mr. choon Bae staring at the building. Tak Gu greeted him and asked him if he wanted to greet the master, at least as a farewell. Mr. Choon Bae said “I ate your bread (from the court) and for me that’s enough as a goodbye.”

Ma jun finally came back home. Still he’s trying to please his father by saying he got the Bong bread’s secret recipy from the first hand man. But coldly as almost always, Director Gu refused by saying if that one from Mr. Choon Bae he would never want to touch it.

Ma jun’s mom nagging him about arrange marriage that he had to agree. She wanted to make it as quickly as possible since Tak Gu as a threat was getting more clearly and sure. Ma jun defended himself by saying he only wanted to get married with Yu Gyeong. And when he’s back to his room, he withdrew something from his old book. Oh my oh my…is that the lost bracelet of Madame Seo I was seeing?? So Ma jun did hear and witnessed the whole thing on that rainy night?? Now everything’s getting clear… no wonder he had that kind of behavior.

After a day of relieve another unlikely event happened again to Pal Bong bakery. Suddenly there’re some people accusing the breads were mixed with iron powder. they’re reporting it to the authorities and resulted the bakery was suspended.

Tak Gu smelled something fishy so he investigated this matter quitely. Fortunately he wasn’t alone. He got Jin gu as his back up. And when they came up with the result that it’s all related to Geo Song, he realized that all this attack was because of him.

Kim Mi sun previous emotional action resulted bad, but she definitely was not thinking about giving up. She aprroached Madame Seo in a department store and did a very simple action. She handed over Director Gu’s necktie that he left when he was injured and treated in Kim Mi Sun’s mansion. It burnt Madame Seo into flame…

The Gu family finally had a full table dinner. but as always, Madame Seo ruined the mood by lifting Ma jun’s arrange marriage plan. Ma jun then confessed to his father that he had a girlfriend and wanted no other girls. Director Gu approved him directly. He asked to meet Yu Gyeong. Director Gu sincerely approved Yu Gyeong regardless her condition. He said it’s enough for him if she wanted to take care of Ma jun and love him sincerely. He said that kid had been so lonely. (yeah, he was right).

Tak Gu’s patient, like other people, had a limit. and this moment was the proper time when he’s losing it. He confronted Geo Song Food, but welcomed by the Ma jun-Yu Gyeong “happy together” scene. Tak Gu was about just passed them through when Ma jun blocked his way. He didn’t want Tak Gu to meet the father. Tak Gu didn’t care, but Ma jun said some words that brought Tak Gu to be in a real anger. They fought, but this time Yu Gyeong was not the topic.

The two fighting was stopped by the presence of Director Gu. Tak Gu then briefly explained to him what happened to Pal bong bakery and wanted him to investigate how come it related to Geo Song.

It’s very sweet that Tak Gu was awaited in front of the Pal bong residence by his two loyal friends: Mi sun and Jin gu. I think i was clearly seeing that there’s a very big potential that Tak Gu-Mi sun relationship will turn to romance.

Finally, Director Gu made a clear statement to Mr. Han. If i may change the sentence without changing its meaning, I’d write it this way, “You’ve been messing up with my kid, you bastard. and now you’re messing my master. my silence is broken this moment, so i’m telling you now to get the hell out of my company soon!”

Mr. Pal bong weakly awoke and asked Tak Gu to bake the Bong bread together. Tak Gu had no idea what he’s gonna face in the next few minutes, so he just baked anthusiastically. I like the narration of their last conversation. They were light words, but i don’t know how but it felt so deep:

“Tak Gu ya, why do you like bread?”

“I like the warm smell that comes from bread”

“Oh I see.”

“Why do you like bread, teacher?”

“Because it’s something that people eat.”

“Oh I see. Then I’ll change my answer into that too.”

“You little punk.”

Mr. Pal bong revealed that he actually knew that Seo Tae Jo was Tak Gu’s brother. And he said Tak Gu had to hold on him and not letting him go. so he wouldn’t make the same mistake like Pal bong let his only bestfriend left.

“And now what’re you going to do, Tak Gu?”

“I’m going to wait until the breads are baked.”

Mr. Pal bong said: “Life is like flower in the field that after it fades, it no longer knows where it goes. But I am very happy to meet you (Tak Gu) at the end of my life.”

and when the breads are baked, Mr. Pal bong has gone for good.

I like this final scene. The master of baking was not alone during his last time. He was accompanied by his family and his loving students. Even Director Gu was there.
